No-KYC Crypto Exchanges Compared

Instant swap services, aggregators, decentralized exchanges and peer-to-peer markets all let you trade crypto without opening a verified account — but they differ in who holds your coins, when identity checks can still happen, and which coins they cover. This guide explains the differences and compares well-known options side by side.

Before you read: we are one of the services compared

ShadowSwap is an instant swap service, so we have an interest in this topic. To keep the comparison fair, every statement about another service below comes from that service's own website, terms or documentation as of the date above, and is linked in the sources list. Where we could not verify something, we say “see their site” instead of guessing. There is no single best option: the right choice depends on the coins you need, how much you are swapping and how much control you want to keep.

What “no-KYC” actually means

KYC (“know your customer”) is the identity verification that regulated exchanges run before you can trade: name, ID document, often a selfie and proof of address. A no-KYC service lets you complete a normal swap without that step — typically without an account at all. You choose a pair, enter the address that should receive the coins, send your deposit and receive the other coin.

“No-KYC” describes the default flow, not a guarantee. Most instant swap services publish an AML (anti-money-laundering) policy that lets them pause a transaction and ask for identity or source-of-funds information when their risk checks flag a deposit, or refuse the transaction entirely. The terms quoted in the table below show that this applies to ShadowSwap as well. Decentralized and peer-to-peer tools work differently, but they come with their own trade-offs.

Not being asked for ID also does not change your legal obligations. Rules on crypto trading, reporting and taxes differ by country, and complying with them is your responsibility. A no-KYC service is a privacy and convenience choice — it is not a way around the law, and the instant swap services compared below publish AML terms that let them refuse funds linked to sanctions or illegal activity.

Four kinds of no-KYC services

Search results for “no-KYC exchange” mix very different products. Knowing which kind you are looking at tells you most of what matters.

Instant swap services

A company quotes a rate, gives you a deposit address and sends the other coin to your address once your deposit is confirmed. No account or order book.

Good for: Quick one-off swaps between coins on different blockchains, from any wallet.

Trade-off: You trust the service with your deposit until the payout arrives, and its AML checks can pause a swap.

Aggregators

A comparison site that requests quotes from several instant swap services and lets you pick one. You then swap directly with the chosen service.

Good for: Comparing rates and each provider’s privacy policy in one place.

Trade-off: The partner service you pick still applies its own terms and AML checks.

Decentralized exchanges (DEXs)

Smart contracts or a decentralized protocol execute the swap. You connect a self-custody wallet and sign the transaction yourself.

Good for: Keeping control of your keys; no company account involved.

Trade-off: You need a compatible wallet, you pay on-chain fees, and mistakes are yours to fix.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) markets

Software matches you with another person; you trade directly, usually with deposits locked in escrow until both sides confirm.

Good for: Buying or selling bitcoin for other currencies without a central exchange.

Trade-off: Slower, depends on finding a counterparty, and needs more care than a swap form.

What to compare

Custody model
Who controls your coins between your deposit and the payout: the service, a protocol, a multisig escrow or only you.
KYC triggers
Read the AML or KYC policy: when can the service ask for ID or source-of-funds information, and what happens to a held deposit if you decline?
Refund policy
What happens if you send the wrong amount or network, deposit late, or the rate moves — and whether refunds carry fees.
Fees and spread
Compare the amount you actually receive, not the advertised fee: a service can charge a visible fee, a spread hidden in the rate, or both. Add the network fees.
Limits
Minimum and maximum amounts per coin, and whether larger amounts are more likely to be checked.
Coin and network coverage
Whether your exact asset is supported on your exact network (for example USDT on Tron versus Ethereum) — not just the ticker.
Speed
Confirmation times on both blockchains plus how the payout is sent; fixed-rate orders can have shorter deposit windows.

“Describes itself as non-custodial” is each service's own wording. With any instant swap service you still send your deposit to an address the service generates and rely on it to complete the swap; the term usually means it keeps no account balances for you.

Where ShadowSwap fits — and where it doesn't

ShadowSwap is a simple instant swap service. You don't create an account or verify your identity for a standard swap. Each swap gets its own one-time deposit address; ShadowSwap holds your deposit while the swap is processed, and after the exchange the ShadowSwap team sends the payout to the address you entered — payouts are not automatic. The site's estimate for a typical swap is 10-30 minutes.

There is no spread and no service fee: the rate is the ratio of the two coins' live market prices, and only the destination network fee is deducted from the payout (details on the fees page). Each coin has a minimum and maximum amount — for example 0.001–100 BTC, 0.01–1,000 ETH, 20–100,000 USDT (TRC20).

Where it is not the strongest choice: ShadowSwap supports 35+ coins and tokens across 10 networks, far fewer than the large instant swap services list, and it offers one rate type rather than separate fixed and floating rates. It also has no published refund policy beyond contacting support with your swap link. If you need a less common coin, a fixed-rate guarantee or to keep custody of your funds the whole time, one of the other options above may suit you better. You can check every supported asset on the supported coins page and read the full flow in how it works.

Checklist before any no-KYC swap

  • Read the service’s AML/KYC policy and refund terms before sending anything, especially for larger amounts.
  • Use the official site only (bookmark it) — phishing copies of swap sites exist.
  • Check the asset and network on both sides, and that your receiving address matches that network.
  • Send exactly the requested amount within the quote or deposit window, from a wallet you control.
  • Keep your swap link or order ID until the payout has arrived; support needs it.
  • Make sure the swap and how you report it comply with the laws and tax rules where you live.
